Learner Engagement through Virtual Apps

Abstract:  

Engagement is one of the challenges educators face as well as access to tools depending on the varied contexts. Participants will explore different virtual tools to promote engagement virtually and in-person. Participants will leave with ideas on tools and activities to adapt to any context and classroom reality. (48)


Target audience:

a. Elementary, Secondary and Higher Education educators

b. Adult Educators

c. Teacher trainers 

d. Language Academy Instructors

e. Student teachers


Session objectives: By the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Understand why apps are relevant for virtual and in-person teaching settings.

2. Differentiate between advantages and disadvantages depending on their own context.

3. Implement strategies to incorporate apps into their teaching practice.

4. Evaluate an array of virtual tools/apps suited for their classroom.

5. Setup apps for learner engagement and apply use into their own lessons.

6. Design examples of lessons using digital apps for virtual and in-person settings. 


Syllabus:  

  1. The content and assignments in this session are ongoing and depend on the previous content, that is each week builds on the previous ones. If participants register late, they will not be able to complete the work as each week closes by a specific deadline.

  2. Participants can earn a Certificate of Completion at the end of the session, as well as badges for each week completed.

  3. In order to obtain badges and certificate of completion participants need to: 

    1.  Complete all weekly activities and assignments, including discussion forums. 

    2.  Participate actively in the weekly discussions responding to prompts and commenting to at least one of their peers.

    3. Complete app portfolio with all criteria explained during week 1

    4. Present their app portfolio through the content space as well as during the closing session of the course.

    5. Attend 70% of live sessions, or completing a summary of each recording in the corresponding Discussion folder

    6. Obtain all badges per week 


Introductory Week: (January 1 - 7)

Focus: Getting to know each other 

Activities:

1. Complete Canvas Profile

2. Enroll in course

2. Watch the orientation video on how to use canvas or the document

3. Complete the google form related to: background, expectations and context where they teach and which interactive space they prefer (FB groups, WhatsApp or Telegram)

4. Explore the content space sites (Canvas)

5. Introduce themselves in the Discussion forum set up for introductions

6. Read about advantages and disadvantages of using apps virtually or in person

Week 1: (January 9 - 15) 

 

Moderators: Miguel Carranza and Grazzia Mendoza / Everyone

 

Synchronous session: Demonstration Kahoot and Jamboard, overview of week 1 activities/tasks

Focus: Understand the relevance of apps and be aware of the advantages and disadvantages based on the participants' context.

Introduce Yourself

 

Task 1: Scrambled doc and reflection (Read, Contribute)

Task 2: Read, Reflect and Share: Review advantages/disadvantages article. Share on Jamboard thoughts and reflections. Post in discussion Forum (Read, Contribute)

Task 3: Explore 2 apps - Kahoot and Jamboard

Task 4: Begin app portfolio: Teaching philosophy (include use of apps for engagement), Outline of Portfolio, post philosophy and outline in discussion forum set up for this purpose (Contribute)

 

Participants receive badge 1 for completing all tasks in week 1

Week 2: (January 16 - 22)

 

Moderators:  Zuleika Zapateiro and Grazzia Mendoza / Everyone

 

Synchronous session: Demonstration Mentimeter, Padlet and Google Docs, overview of week 2 activities/tasks

Focus: How to incorporate apps in virtual or in person settings. Evaluate apps for complexity, ease of use, high and low connectivity contexts.

 

Task 1: Review templates that incorporate apps, analyze lessons that incorporate apps. (Reflect, Contribute - Response to guided questions)

Task 2: Look at different apps and explore them, look at sites and evaluate its use within participants' own context. (Evaluate, Contribute - choose to apps and provide assessment of them)

Task 3: Explore 3 apps - Mentimeter, Padlet, Google docs

Task 4: Continue working on app portfolio - identify opportunities and gaps in participants’ own context. (Share, Contribute - Add reflection section on which apps will have the potential to be used in participants' context)

 

Participants receive badge 2 for completing all tasks in week 2

Week 3: (January 23 - 29)

Synchronous session: Wooclap, Wakelet, and Genially; overview of week 3 activities/tasks

Focus: Application - use of apps, setting apps for learner use, how to organize tutorials, how apps contribute to the focus of the lesson.

 

Task 1: Apply/Use the apps, hands on activities and reflect on application (Choose app 1, apply in own context) 

Task 2: Choose one of the apps used in the classroom and write a detailed description of what happened in the classroom (Mid-week contribute - share reflections in discussion forum)

Task 3: Continue working on app portfolio - identify how easy or difficult it was to use the apps in the classroom or design the tutorials. (Share tutorials (at least 1) and share reflections on which app (s) has (have) the most potential for participant's context)

 

Participants receive badge 3 for completing all tasks in week 3

Week 4: (January 30 - February 5)

Synchronous session: Demonstration Edpuzzle, Peardeck, Quizziz, overview of week 4 activities/tasks

Focus: Application - use of apps, setting apps for learner use, how to organize tutorials, how apps contribute to the focus of the lesson. 

 

Task 1: Apply/Use the apps, hands on activities and reflect on application (Choose app 2, apply in own context) 

Task 2: Choose one of the apps used in the classroom and write a detailed description of what happened in the classroom (Mid-week contribute - share reflections in discussion forum)

Synchronous session: Participants volunteer to showcase their portfolios. overview of week 5 final activities/tasks

Focus: Closing session and reflections of Learner Engagement through Virtual Apps. Sharing of app portfolio.  

 

Task 1: Share app portfolio with peers and provide feedback, receive and respond to peers feedback. (Share, Contribute - Share portfolio in discussion forum (link or document)

Task 2: Choose one example from your app portfolio that you feel the proudest of and state why. (Share, Contribute to discussion forum)

Task 3: Share with peers apps you will use and incorporate them for learner engagement. (Share, contribute list of apps to use)

Task 4: Final reflections on the use of apps for learner engagement (Contribute - Discussion Forum)

 

Participants who have all 5 badges will receive a certificate of completion
